Pieces

For the exhibition at Calit2 Gallery, the following works were created within the span of the months of August and September 2015. They encompass a variety of styles and methods, ranging from generative systems, to field-recordings, to tape-pieces. In addition to the musical content all pieces specifically deal with the 16 channel array and movement of the speakers. The two systems pieces ‘neurons’ and ‘magnets’ derive the principles for all three layers of sound-generation, spatialisation and movement from the same model. In the other works, spatial disposition and movement were tied in during the composition process.

The current collection of works:

Tobias Gerber: as if – notions of there

»as if – notions of there« is a spatial-kinetic composition, that mainly uses concrete sounds originating from an instrumental translation of field recordings. It is part of a chain of sonic ‘depictions’, changes of media and translations of a real situation that is closer to the original moment than one might think. more…

Martin Neukom, Marcus Maeder: Neurons

An imaginary, sounding neuron model. The loudspeakers of the system behave like integrate-and-fire-neurons, the work can be interpreted as a simple network of neurons or a small population of entities, where certain properties spread (i. e. diseases, aggressions, opinions etc.). more…

Jan Schacher: Nothing Exists…

This composition explores multiplicities of voices, polyphonies, through layering and juxtaposition of movements and sonic spaces. Word fragments evoke these states: The body in a state of music, the desiring body, the madness of being immersed in sound and music. The piece was composed with the voices of Sarah Swinwood, Kornelia Bruggmann, and Alexandra Frosio. more…

Daniel Bisig, Jan Schacher: Magnets

Magnets is a generative piece in which individual loudspeakers assume the behaviours of magnets. The sonic characteristics of the magnets depend on their respective orientations. Magnetic movements and sonic shifts propagate through the entire installation. more…

Philippe Kocher: Speak Up

The speakers emit, one after another, abstract yet – in their speech-likeness – oddly meaningful sounds. It’s as if they were individuals attempting to express themselves. more…

Medusa Cramer: The Left-Hand Path

On the Left-Hand Path, several fundamental enlightenment-seeking questions arise: What society do we live in? Are we content with our current way of life? How can we determine our own destiny? In the audio play, these questions are posed by individuals characterised by having an oppositional attitude towards their environment: artists, radicals, intellectuals, sectarian gurus, alcoholics, the exploited and supporters of an alternative society. more…
